The Late Illinois Secretary of State – Paul Powell was quoted:
“There’s only one thing worse than a defeated politician, and that’s a broke one.”
It is not often you read anything I post where I would agree with something former Illinois Senator Don Wooten has said. It does happen, but it is a rarity. I do agree with his statement about the current political scandal surrounding Gov. Rod Blagojevich in his writings on QCOnline where he says: “Pay-to-Play is an Age Old Illinois Political Game”. I do not agree with his claim that despite the nasty impression of politicians given by the current Governor Rod Blagojevich scandal, that there are some “straight arrows” left in politics. I do not believe there have been any “straight arrows” in politics, at any state or federal level, during my 29+ years on this planet! It is not in the nature of the business. The only groups of politicians where you might still find some straight arrows are at the lower levels of local politics, where they have not yet been absorbed into the Black Abyss of State and Federal politics. I will offer Wooten this olive-branch – I will agree that some of the “crooked arrows” in politics are probably not as bent as others. Politics is and has been, since long before my lifetime ever started, a game of collecting and redistributing enough money to stay in power while stashing away enough shoebox legal tender to live comfortably. That also includes appeasing constituents by telling them what you think they want to hear and directing state and federal focus funds in a manner that will get you reelected.
