Everybody’s doing it, doing it – picking their noses and chewing it. A disgusting habit, no doubt.

And then there is another disgusting habit that everybody is doing it, doing it – screwing the pooch, then suing for it, suing for it.

Less Ordinary Christmas Gifts 2012

Chicago Christmas

Dear Santa Christmas is just days away. My Christmas list is short and All I Really Want for Christmas ( not necessarily in the order listed) is:

  • A Chicago Bears Win in the 2013 Superbowl
  • A Chicago Cubs Series Win in the 2013 World Series. (Preferably over the hated (oops, forgot it was Christmas) Chicago White Sox.
  • A couple tons of Gold dust.
  • Oh yeah and one of these –> http://www.howstuffworks.com/invisibility-cloak.htm

No Pinball Wizard here

I have allowed my email account to pile-up to the point where I am sure it is ready to explode – almost 1500 unread messages when I finally signed in.  I have been bouncing around from the doctors’ offices to the hospitals like a launched ball inside a pinball machine (Hey, Christmas is less than four months away –> Hint, Hint, Hint –> a scoundrely good less ordinary Christmas Gift)  for about five weeks. So basically I just ain’t felt like reading my mail, most of which will head straight to the SPAM bin, without even getting opened! Still I have come across one piece of email -(sandwiched in between a myriad of Spammy emails from sites trying to hook me up with untold millions of married and single women seeking  a wild no-strings-attached  one-night stand)- that actually looks like a legitimate site. The site called, Live Citizen, was asking if I would post a link to their site; where they are seeking people from around the country to enter a writing contest where entrants can offer for solutions in five different categories currently challenging the US. They seem to be seeking all viewpoints. I don’t know anything about the site, nor am I promoting their contest. But I will pass on their link for any reader that thinks they would like to explore the opportunity that the site claims to be offering.

Pay to Play

I was reading a couple of stories recently where the law practices conflicting comportment concerning  similar circumstances. And while I choose to believe both sets of  individuals facing the legal system made choices that I consider -stupid is as stupid does- questionable behavior –> one practice is actually illegal while a similar practice is not. My question becomes – in the eyes of the legal system, why is one behavior legal and the other not?

In the first case a Utah man -Kody Brown- has been facing charges of bigamy after TLC made a popular television show called Sister Wives, surrounding his polygamous marriage lifestyle with four wives. The family  also has 17 children. With four wives and 17 children  – I would need a large supply of pharmaceuticals including Aspirin, Viagra and some sort of happy pill just to survive.  I wouldn’t even want to think about how I could financially pay for the living arrangement- much less four women cursing at me for leaving the toilet seat up, hanging the toilet paper the wrong direction as well as my large collection of Moline Dispatch editions for reading material kept in the bathroom. (In my childhood days the newspaper would also have joined the Sears and Roebuck and Montgomery Wards catalogs in serving the extra duty of replacing toilet paper in the out house.) Fortunately for the family in question legal proceedings of bigamy by Utah authorities have been dropped.

In the similar yet different case (legally) another man -Desmond Hatchett-  whom  has fathered 30 children with eleven different women, does not have to worry about polygamy charges, as he has not bothered to marry any of the children’s mothers.  Yet he has faced legal problems for several years; due to the fact that he is incapable of keeping up with child support payments, for so many children. No doubt that is a problem. Payments of child support for 30 children would probably send Bill Gates into the poorhouse. The man is now seeking financial help from the government to meet his child support.

The conundrum for a poor simple hillbilly like me is – why does the law look at the man with four wives and seventeen children as a bigamist criminal, yet the man with thirty kids from eleven different mothers, is only a criminal when he can’t pay his child support. Now I don’t  personally care how many wives or children a man has or doesn’t have. I have been a lifelong bachelor my whole 29+ years on this planet. (Maybe it’s the toilet seat issue?) And one wife sounds  like more than I could handle at this stage. I do believe that if you are going to take the time and effort to make babies – you are personally financially responsible for them. Yet I do question a law that punishes one person while another skates on a technicality. Perhaps it is time to dump the bigamy laws. Or better yet, perhaps it is time to get government out of the marriage business altogether and leave it up to the churches and religious institutions that created it. The governments time concerning marriage is better off spent chasing down deadbeat dads and moms whom don’t like to pay to play.

Stirring the Pot of Legal Shades of Gray

Mug shot of Rod Blagojevich.

Mug shot of Rod Blagojevich. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Okay, so I was reading the articles on QCOnline, by Kristy Mergenthal, covering the trial of the Geneseo woman whom faked being ill with cancer and flimflammed local citizens into donating around a $100,000 dollars to assist her with living. If there is anything that is as sure as death and taxes in my family – it is almost assured that if a member of familial-Scoundrel lives past the age of 50 they will probably face a battle with some form of cancer before they are eventually called home to be with God in Heaven. In these more of familial-Scoundrel tend to win more and more of those battles than they did in past decades. So I have to admit I find it extremely reprehensible that anyone would fake the set of tragic events actual Cancer victims and their families must endure, in order to scam money and seemingly in this case, some sort of broken-wing syndrome for attention.  Still, as I was pondering the story , I was bemused by remembering an old television commercial – (in fact I believe it was used by her current attorney) – talking about how the legal system is many shades of gray.  And despite the fact that were I the judge, I would literally throw the law book at the defendant and hit her solidly in the head with it – before sending her to incarceration along with Illinois Gov.’s Ryan and Blagojevich – I have decided to extrapolate upon the incident in “shades of gray”!

One of the things that seems to be an irritating ulcer on this case is that the defendant lied for personal gain. And if the storyline is correct she told some whoppers.  Uh  not  that doesn’t happen on an everyday basis in the real world. If I had a dollar for every time I witnessed a lie someone used for personal gain I would have so much money I would belong to the 1% of societies well-to-do instead of milling around with the most bottom-seeded of the 99% sifting through the leftover coffee dregs of worlds money pool. If there is a reality of life – it is that people lie a lot, every day.  They lie to strangers, they lie to friends, family and most of all they lie to themselves so that they can rationalize all the lies they have told in order to leap through the rings and hoops of life’s daily obstacle course. I have read several different estimates but most seem to hint that the average person lies four or more times a day. Heck I have seen salesmen/women lie four times in a matter of minutes.  But I guess that wasn’t for personal gain.

Perhaps it is the amount of money involved. Okay that is a lot. But then how is her lying about her health, to gain large amounts of cash,  any different than the panhandling guys or gals holding signs at the numerous road intersection asking for money. Sure they only get a few bucks at a time. And many of them are in dire need of the money they take in standing in the sun all day, while begging. Still, I also remember being shocked by an old newspaper article, from a few years back, where one of the people interviewed was making more annual income standing at crossroads a few times a week – than I was putting in 40-50 hours a week at my fulltime job. So it was certainly evident his homeless signage wasn’t all that truthful. In all honesty some dude annually making between $20,000-$30,000 tax-free dollars a year, with a phony sign, isn’t all that different than what this Geneseo lady is accused of doing for personal gain. Her lies were just more hurtful. But basically her crime was just another form of panhandling.

In fact what is she accused of  – that people don’t shell out $20 or more per person every time they enter a movie theatre. She told a lie. She told a lie that was a story. She created a fantasy that entertained people by making them feel good about themselves as altruists and humanitarians.  Kind of like walking in to a movie theatre except instead of putting mega bucks into the pockets of Hollyweird elitists, some poor woman bettered her life with assistance of would-be philanthropists –> just needing aa cause to rally behind. She evidently needed the money and put it to use to better her family. And how many people would have run to help her if she had just said – hey I need some cash and the milk of human companionship in order to survive.  Probably not many. She would have had better luck standing on Billy Wolf Road with a sign saying homeless – need money to buy food. Of course then Big Brother Government Child Welfare Agency would have been all over her looking for reasons to take her kids.  It’s not like she bilked multiple millions of dollars from Dixon, Illinois taxpayers to build a horse farm or something. Though I am guessing that is something a Government Bureaucrat might do.

I am not excusing what she did. I am not saying she is some innocent victim. Nope she is the perpetrator of a crime not a victim. But when you look at what she is charged with how is her actions  any different than what is usually classified as the public nuisance of panhandling. What makes her crime anymore worse than the panhandler pulling 20 G’s a year holding a homeless sign.  And if we are convicting her for lying – are we next in line for the numerous deceptions we perpetrate on society?  Hey maybe she should have hired me for her legal defense instead of Jack “Many Shades of Gray” Schwartz. I’m no lawyer but I did once sleep and conference at a Holiday Inn – so I must probably be some kind of expert. Nah, she wouldn’t want me as her attorney- I’d still throw the law book at her and lock her up with Ryan and Blago.

That finishes this Stirring of the Pot while playing at Devils Advocate.

Xi Jinping – Just Passing Through the Quad Cities

Current Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, predicted to be the next President of Communist China, is currently goodwill traveling in the US.  He was greeted in Washington DC by unusually extravagant pomp that included a nineteen gun salute and a 350 troop honor guard. A first for foreign dignitary visiting the US. Xi spent Valentines Day in political discourse supposedly working US/China ties, with Obama and his security advisors. To the best of my knowledge, there is absolutely no veracity to any vicious rumor -that instead of doing his normal subservient bow, kneel and kiss of the foreign diplomats signet ring- President Obama, VP Joe Biden and other staff members performed a Valentines Day rim job on the future Chinese President, to finalize any future US/China business and political relations they discussed.  According to a National Press service, which will remain unnamed by this author,  Mr. Xi’s is then to visit some farm in Iowa.  ROFLMAO.

I am constantly haranguing the local press on their lack of effort that they put into modern journalism. The story by a major press service of Xi’s visit to some farm in Iowa is another example of the lack of effort put into contemporary journalistic efforts. If they had actually bothered to use journalistic curiosity in order look into the reasons a future President of China would visit some farm in Iowa – they would have found out, as the Quad City media enlightened their readers, that Mr. Xi had visited the same region outside Muscatine Iowa in a previous visit touring the US. As can be expected when foreign dignitaries visit rural America, there is an ever increasing buzz among the residents. Some of the more giddy, disclosed stories of interaction with the Chinese official during his previous visit. One person was digging out a can of tea that VP Xi had presented to the individual during his previous visit. Hmm – Makes you wonder when the  last time the reporter, who educated his or her readers about Xi’s visit to some farm in Iowa, received any type of gift from a Vice President of a Super Power Nation. Not that the local press didn’t have boo-boos in their story.

The local Quad City media was eager to mention that VP Xi would be arriving at the Quad City airport on Wednesday afternoon on his way to the farm outside of Muscatine Iowa. The story on QCOnline – listed on 02/14/12 – talked about how:

Several Muscatine residents talked warmly Tuesday afternoon about a planned meeting with an old friend today.

Of course the article also mentions that VP Xi is not actually arriving in the QC until Wednesday afternoon, 02-15-12, on his way to Muscatine. Nice proofreading editors. Meanwhile back at the ranch….
Another thing the QCOnline piece mentioned was that there would be a welcoming committee of Illinois Politicians for the Chinese VP, when he landed at the Quad City Airport in Moline, Illinois. I don’t imagine that he will get quite the pomp he received during his arrival in Washington DC . In fact if I were Xi’s security, I would be very worried if anyone mentioned a possible 19 gun salute at the Moline airport – considering that both John McCain and Barack Obama were confronted by assassination plots during their 2008 campaigning in the Quad City region. Though that happened on the Iowa side of the QC.  If I were Xi’s security I would “Just Say, NO!” to any possible welcoming involving projectile weapons.

Even more interesting the Quad City article was the mention that the welcoming committee at the Quad City airport would be headed by Illinois Lt. Governor Sheila Simon and Secretary of State, Jesse White.  Unlike in  Muscatine, where Iowa Governor Branstadt will be welcoming XI, there was no mention of Illinois Governor Three-County Quinn being involved with the Illinois ceremony. I suppose Quinn has better things to do, as he helplessly flounders around trying to right the sinking ship that best describes the Illinois economic outlook. According to the QCOnline article, China imported around 3.9 billion dollars of Illinois products in 2011. Yeah, , I would send my second-in-command to head a welcoming committee for the VP of the third largest importer of Illinois’ goods. Perhaps Three-County Quinn has some more important bootyious maximus kissing scheduled for Chicago “We’re Number 1!!!” Politicos, whose “Tombstone Voting” practices were probably integral in electing Three-County,  that overrides any common courtesy for major trading partners: it is probably some genius plan by Quinn to keep from ending up on a Mad Dog Rahm Emanuel enemy list.
