Chicago Cubs Trade For Rich Harden

The Chicago Cubs acquired pitchers Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin from the Oakland A’s. According to MLB Trade Rumors the players they sent over to Oakland in the exchange are pitcher Sean Gallagher, outfielder Matt Murton, Infielder Eric Patterson and catcher Josh Donaldson. I am not a Hendry fan but this could actually turn out to be a decent trade, assuming Harden does not break down. The article stated after his last outing Harden had experienced dead-arm problems. Hopefully it is not anything serious. Matt Murton was not going to break into the Cubs multi-million dollar outfield anytime soon so this trade could work out for him as well as the Cubs. Patterson was in the same bolt in the infield options. Perhaps this trade will work for him also. Gallahger looks like he has a future as a MLB pitcher and I am sorry to see him go but he is not ready for prime time and the Cubs could use a solid veteran arm in the rotation. Gaudin’s numbers look solid this year out of the bullpen so the trade has possible upsides for both teams. The Cubs gave up a lot or young talent but on paper if Harden holds together, it looks like they got good value in return.

  1. I wrote about this tonight as well. What a pickup for the Cubs! Great value.

  2. I also think it is a good move by both teams. For the Cubs it is something of a gamble considering Hardens injury history.
